Big boat pictures from this year's hospitality crew

Lisa Springfield, Darcy Vershoor, and Ben Powers of this year's Oregon Offshore hospitality crew were kind enough to send us these pictures of Neptune's Car and Rage upon their arrivals in Victoria.

CYC would like to thank these folks, on behalf of all our racers, for their hard work at the docks in Victoria. We got fantastic feedback about their efforts and the great welcome they gave each boat.

We'd also like to thank Carolyn Martin for her help with fundraising, Kathy Kershner for her help organizing at various race events, and Emily Shea for putting in a ton of effort and putting up with Ryan for three days at the finish line. We can't do it without volunteers like them.

For the rest of the finish line pictures, follow the links from our previous post. You can also still buy 2013 merchandise here.

2013 Oregon Offshore Photos

Here are a couple links to a public Picasa album I created to share the photos I took during the Oregon Offshore this last week. There are two album links, one of my digital SLR camera pics and the other are pics I took with my GoPro. Arrival pictures will be uploaded later, as I have to get them from the hospitality crew. There are also a few pictures to track down after my memory card maxed out at the BBQ. Enjoy!

While Supplies Last - 2013 Oregon Offshore Shirts still available!

If you missed your chance to buy shirts at the Skippers' Meeting, we have a small number of shirts still available for sale in limited sizes.

Also, there were a number of requests for long sleeve tech shirts and women sizes.  If this appeals to you, leave a comment and given enough interest we'll consider a limited-run of a new Oregon Offshore t-shirt design.

Well sailors, RC is finally back stateside with internet access again and here are your much anticipated final results for the 2013 Oregon Offshore! I have calculated both fleet and overall results. I will include those cruising actual finish times below.

Thanks to all our competitors, sponsors, volunteers, Astoria Yacht Club, and Royal Victoria Yacht Club for coming together to make a truly awesome Oregon Offshore come together! I will get more photos up from the race for your viewing pleasure. Thank You!

Latest Updates

Morning all! RC here had to get a little sleep after a pretty late night of boats finishing. Here are the latest updates:

Rose Petals finished under motor this morning around 0400 hours.

Riva got stuck outside the Harbour for a while this morning, but finally crossed the finish line around 0600 hours this am.

Rya is approaching the finish and should be finishing in the next 20 minutes.

Panama Red called this morning and said they had to retire from racing and are motoring in after a couple of big knock downs that are worrisome for structural damage.

Looks like most of our boats have made the turn and are working their way down the Strait of Juan de Fuca!

Stay tuned, trophies are still up for grabs in many classes!

Anam Cara has crossed the finish line!

Anam Cara just crossed the finish and is sitting in a pretty sweet spot to get the corrected overall! Great job Tom Kelly and crew!

Neptune's Car first to finish the 2013 Oregon Offshore! Great job Paul LaMarche and crew!

Neptune's Car approaching Victoria!

Just got a call a little while ago that Neptune's Car is an hour out! We don't see them yet, but are expecting them soon!

Neptune's Car at Sheringham Point

Tracker is showing Neptune's Car at Sheringham Point doing 11 kts with a WNW breeze at 17 kts!

Update from Riva

A little update from the boys on Riva! Looks like they remain in good spirits despite the light winds, thanks for sharing, Chris!

"Abeam Umatilla Reef. So far so good. Looks like we have come out of the night's toilet bowl in a decent spot..."

And the first to finish in the 2013 Oregon Offshore is... The Norwegian Pearl? Wait, I sure don't remember seeing that entry?!

Just kidding folks! The wind looks pretty light out there this morning and the harbor looks like glass, so time for all of us landlubbers to pray for wind and do our wind dances to appease the wind gods to help get our sailors up the coast!

There just might be a pic of my wind dance coming later. ;)

RC on Station

Doing work on the blog earlier. ;)

Neptune's Car seems to have a nice lead on the race tracker! All boats are north of Grays Harbor and working their way up the Washington coastline.

Stay tuned for more updates from the West Can RC Crew.

Supplemental Sailing Instructions now available

With less than 48 hours left until the start of this year's race, skippers can now find the Supplemental Sailing Instructions by clicking the link to the left.

We've also posted a link to the US Coast Guard Light List, which includes updated navigational information for the Pacific Northwest.

Peregrine won't make it this year

We just heard from skipper Steve Smolinske of the Catalina 38, Peregrine, and after fighting a huge headwind in the Strait of Juan de Fuca on his way south, he's recalculated his arrival time in Astoria. Rather than arriving at the Columbia bar at full ebb tomorrow night, he's decided to take this year off. Bummer.

See you at Swiftsure, Steve!

Cathlamet Channel Shoaling

Portland skippers! As you are preparing to move your boats down the river to Astoria for the big race, be sure to consider the following warning from the US Coast Guard: The Cathlamet Channel has such severe shoaling that it is not navigable or capable of being marked by navigational aids. Certain buoys marking the channel along the Washington side of Puget Island have been removed and will be removed from chart 18523. Click here for more details, and if you have any questions, you can call the Marine Safety Unit in Portland at 503-240-9310.

Her PHRF rating is 177, and she now hails from Nanoose Bay, on Vancouver Island, BC.

Banner Year

It turns out no one is impressed with yesterday's post about 20 boats. At the Kickoff Party last night, we got five more entries, and we have at least two more in the mail! In a few days we will confirm the final number, which will be at least 27. This is the highest level of participation in the last decade! The closest in recent memory was 24 boats in 2006. We are thrilled!

Last night, we received entries from:

Monday, April 22, 2013

The fleet grows to 20!

We've received two more entries: Neptune's Car and Cool Change.

Neptune's Car
Neptune's Car is a Santa Cruz 70 owned by Paul LaMarche of Seattle, WA. With a PHRF rating of -84, we're expecting that this boat and Rage will have a rivalry worth following.

Cool Change
Cool Change is a C&C 38 with a PHRF rating of 144. Skipper Frank Noragon is an experienced Oregon Offshore racer from Portland, OR.

Tonight is the Kickoff Party and the deadline for entry. Since the deadline requires entries to be postmarked by midnight tonight, we may see a few entries trickle in over the next few days. Check back tomorrow to hear about the skippers who are bringing their entries to the Kickoff Party!

Entries 16 and 17 Received Today!

We've received two more entries, for a total of 17 boats so far. One is CYC member Jim Calnon with his C&C 34, Katzenjammer. She rates 147, and has participated in this race multiple times before.

Panama Red
We also received an entry for Panama Red, a Mumm 36 owned and skippered by Jeff McDonald and Chris Schweiger, another CYC member. Panama Red has a PHRF rating of 51, and this will be her first time racing Oregon Offshore, although her skippers are long-time Offshore racers. Thanks to our volunteers for a successful Going North Seminar!

CYC-Portland just hosted its 3rd annual “Going North” seminar. The event was well-attended, with approximately 50 racers and cruisers on hand.

Steve Rander of Schooner Creek Boat Works kicked off the evening with an informative presentation on how he approaches preparing his yacht for offshore passages. Frank Colistro followed with a race strategy session for Oregon Offshore competitors (much of the content reflects Timm Lessley’s strategy for California Girl, so it’s worth studying!). The event concluded with a cruiser's view of the Salish Sea. Eric Rouzee shared some of his favorite cruising grounds in the region with a picture tour, and these hidden gems will now be a little more popular for it.

Special thanks to Eric Hopper and West Coast Event Productions / Pure Space for providing the venue!

You can download the presentations for boat prep and race strategy here.

Blade Runner makes twelve...

Our latest entry has arrived from Bellingham, WA. Blade Runner, a pretty red Santa Cruz 27, has a PHRF rating of 159, and this will be skipper Ward Naviaux's first Oregon Offshore.

Keep 'em coming!

Going North Seminar This Tuesday!

The Corinthian Yacht Club is proud to bring you GOING NORTH 2013

Race Trackers

Back by popular demand, competing boats will be provided with SPOT trackers again this year. If you’re a fan of ocean sailboat racing, come back on the 9th of May to watch the race unfold live here. For now, you can watch a replay of last year’s race.

It's true...

Aja's entry has arrived! She's an Ericson 35-2 skippered by Rich Elstrom, out of Astoria, OR. PHRF 150.

We've heard quite a few rumors of other boats planning to enter. If they're all true, this will prove to be one of the biggest years yet for Oregon Offshore.

Updates to Oregon Offshore Race Packet

The 2013 Oregon Offshore Race Packet has been amended, and you can access the new version through the link on the left of this page. Two significant changes were made:

Meeting a manufacturer's requirements for life raft certification is not sufficient if the certification does not also meet PIYA standards. PIYA requires that life rafts have been certified more recently than May 12, 2011 for this year's race.

We've also changed the contact phone number for the finish line. Please make a note of the new number.

Wednesday, March 20, 2013

Peregrine is back!

We received an entry from Steve Smolinske of Bellevue, WA with his Catalina 38, Peregrine. She rates 123 and has run this race multiple times.

The fleet has now grown to ten boats!

Check your passports!

Skippers and crew, be sure to check your passports. They take 4-6 weeks for processing, and you'll need them to get into Canada at the end of the race. The start is only 49 days away!

Tuesday, March 19, 2013

Three more boats have joined the fleet

We have received entries from three more boats, all owned by CYC members:
  • Rage, a Wylie 70 owned by Nancy and Steve Rander with a PHRF rating of -69;
  • Riva, a J-46 owned by Scott Campbell with a PHRF rating of 45;
  • and Bum's Rush, a Cascade 36 owned by Mark McCuddy

Bum's Rush rates 183 and was the race winner in 2011. We're glad to have her back!

Monday, March 11, 2013

Two more new entries (and a rumor of a third)

CYC member Doug Schenk has entered his J105, Free Bowl of Soup. Doug has run this race multiple times and we are looking forward to seeing him again.
Another CYC member, Tom Kelly has entered Anam Cara, a J-122. Anam Cara is a successful racer (she won the Swiftsure two years ago).

Rumor has it that we should also see an entry from Astoria Yacht Club from Rich Elstrom and his boat Aja. Aja had mechanical difficulties last year, but everything is repaired and they are looking forward to the race.

Wednesday, February 27, 2013

Two more new entries for the 2013 race

Pete Shainin, hailing from Anacortes, WA has once again entered his Steven 47 Passepartout. Passepartout has run a number of Offshores and is always competitive.

Portlander and CYC member Eric Collins has entered his Santa Cruz 27 Kokopelli. Kokopelli is also a perennial racer in the Offshore. It's great to see her back.

Tuesday, February 12, 2013

Cruise Ships

Offshore weekend will be busy at both the Ports of Victoria and Astoria. May is when the cruise lines reposition their ships from cruising sunny Mexico and the Carribean and head for summer cruising in Alaska. There are two cruise ships, the Norwegian Pearl and the Norwegian Sun, who will be going up the coast from Astoria to Victoria. The Norwegian Pearl will arrive in Victoria on Friday at 0800 hours and leave at 1700 hours, the Norwegian Sun arrives on Saturday at 0800 hours, leaving at 1700 hours.

There are also two ships heading to Victoria from San Diego. The Westerdam arrives on Thursday at 1700 hours and leaves at 2200 hours. The Zuiderdam arrives on Friday at 1400 hours, leaving at 2300 hours. Many racers will see these ships offshore - some may see them up close, since some of the scheduled departures are at times when racers are likely to be arriving in Victoria (the fast ones anyway).

Saturday will be a busy day at the cruise ship docks, with both ships and Offshore racers arriving. The Oosterdam arrives at 1800 and leaves at 2359, just in time for racers to be finishing.

Great news for boats that need a qualifying race for the 2014 Vic-Maui. The Oregon Offshore is now one of those qualifiers. More information will follow, but now is a good time to put our race on your racing schedule.
